At Stork Rentals, we rent a lot of double buggies and have tried and tested many over the last 10 years! We’ve seen brands come in and out of fashion; when my kids were small Quinny was the buggy everyone had. The next generation were all walking around with Uppababy, and Gweneth Paltrow had everyone wanting a Bugaboo…. Oh yes, we have tried and tested many, many buggies!
When it comes to double buggies however, it’s really not about the brand. Some of my favourite brands have let me down with their doubles. There are very definite characteristics that you need in a double buggy and I will share what we look for, with you today!

Now, you will be surprised to hear that we don’t actually rent, what I consider to be the best double buggy on the market! In our experience, the Out N About Nipper is the best double buggy there is, no question. It’s so light you can easily use it with twins up to 5 years of age (this theory has already been tested by my sister!). HOWEVER, it is entirely unsuitable for travel! Too many pieces that stick out and could easily break and the wheels are too big!

- Side by Side. I know some of you will run a mile when you hear me say tandem buggy… but let me explain! Firstly, they are all designed nowadays to get fit the average door, so that argument is closed! Secondly, the weight distribution is very specific if it’s one in front of the other… if you get it wrong, you feel like you are trying to drive a train. Thirdly, steps and curbs! Have you ever tried to get up and down a curb or a step with a double buggy that’s one on front of the other? It can feel like the pram will snap if you have the heavy child in the front… which is my final argument against one in front of the other, it’s not really suited to children of different sizes.
- Collapse. The collapse mechanism on any buggy, double or single has to be easy. Nowadays you shouldn’t have to faff around with taking seats off the frame to fold the pram. (This is especially true if you are travelling because there is more risk that the pram will arrive minus a seat!) Double buggies should collapse in one piece. You have enough to be doing trying to manage two small children, never mind taking apart the buggy to get it into the car!
- Materials! Are they washable, can you get them off easily without having to unscrew the entire buggy. This is an important feature for us, I am not judging anyone on how often they do or don’t wash their buggies!
- Lightweight! You do need to be able to push and turn the buggy with the children in it, on your own, without needing a hoist! If the frame of the buggy is heavy, wait until you put the kids in it!
- Spare parts. In our business we always need spare parts, so it is perhaps not a necessary criterion but worth considering. Double buggies are extremely expensive so it’s very frustrating if something breaks and you can’t easily replace it.
